Don’s professional background includes 15 years in education, and 20 years in sports management. Training and performance management has been Don’s core professional focus in each of these areas.
After 10 years of secondary teaching experience, Don spent his last 5 years in education in leadership and administrative roles as the Senior Curriculum Policy Advisor for Health and Vocational Education for the WA Ministry of Education. A major project focus in this role was the implementation of Australia’s first, K-12 comprehensive Health Education Syllabus, and also managing the State-wide teacher in-servicing program in support of the curricular implementation.
Leaving education in 1990, Don commenced a career in sports management. Apart from his own successful international career as an athlete and coach, Don has been the CEO of a National League sporting franchise, a high performance sports manager for 3 Olympic campaigns, and the CEO of 2 National Sporting Organisations. Career highlights in include managing the high performance program for the 2004 Australian Olympic Baseball Team that won a silver medal in the Athens Olympics, and induction in the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Don cites the successful lobbying work aimed at the repeal of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) and support of the higher education Student Services and Amenities Fee legislation undertaken with friend and colleague, the late Tom O’Sullivan as the most rewarding experience of his professional career. The success of this campaign generated an additional $60 million per annum back into the university sport sector in Australia.
