Sports Architect / Practice Director – Studio106 Architect, New Zealand
Dion is a former international field hockey player, having represented his country over 12 years, including the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, 2002 Commonwealth Games and multiple Hockey World Cups. Dion was a silver medallist at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002 and since retiring in 2005 has successfully combined his two foremost passions: sports, and architecture. In 2009 Dion established Studio106 to specialise in the masterplanning, design, and delivery of multisports, community and leisure projects across NZ.
Twenty-five years of designing, playing, coaching, volunteering in administration, and strategic roles in local community sport and the high performance environment, Dion has a depth of knowledge and empathy to help people achieve their project goals. Dion has worked across codes involving soccer, rugby football, rugby league, tennis, hockey, athletics, basketball, netball, and indoor sports, as well as informal play recreation, and non-sport community groups.
The idea that the high performance, informal, and grass-roots communities can co-exist is central to Dion’s thinking. Where good design is as much about fit for purpose economic viability, as it is to encourage a sense of community activation and social connections.
