Founder and CEO – Collective Leisure
David Burns is the Founder and CEO of Collective Leisure – created with the purpose of helping reduce chronic disease through a systems-based approach. Having experienced a turbulent childhood and growing up in a deprived community, David found solace in sport from a young age. This was the driver for him to devote his studies and early career to sport and inclusion, using sport to break down barriers in disadvantaged communities and help transform lives. Having lost his father at the age of 26 to liver cancer, David emigrated to Australia in 2008 to start a new life. Where England’s passion is football, he found Australia’s to be swimming. So, over the next 11 years he dedicated his career to managing leisure facilities. Having previously worked for the English Football Association, 5 Local Authorities (including the City of Sydney) and Belgravia Leisure. David has a unique blend of experience serving the community from a sports governing body, public and private sector perspective. In 2019 he decided he wanted to use his passion and skills to have a bigger social impact. Combining his life’s work of using activity to achieve well-being, with a focus on inclusion, Collective Leisure was born.
